At Central County Fire & Rescue, your safety, and the safety of your loved ones, is our No. 1 concern. Here are our tips for honoring our country this Memorial Day while celebrating safely with family, friends, food and fun.
Safe Grilling
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

Safe Boating
- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
- Always check your vessel before you head out to make sure everything is in good working order.
- Respect your limits and keep within your limits to avoid injury.
- Don’t drink and drive a boat.
- If you notice storm clouds, a sudden temperature drop or wind speed increasing, play it safe and get off the water.
- When operating a motorized boat, know about carbon monoxide; this odorless, colorless poisonous gas is emitted by all combustion engines and onboard motor generators.
