Memorial Day Safety Tips - Central County Fire & Rescue

Memorial Day Safety Tips

At Central County Fire & Rescue, your safety, and the safety of your loved ones, is our No. 1 concern. Here are our tips for honoring our country this Memorial Day while celebrating safely with family, friends, food and fun.

Safe Grilling

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

Safe Boating

  • Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
  • Always check your vessel before you head out to make sure everything is in good working order.
  • Respect your limits and keep within your limits to avoid injury.
  • Don’t drink and drive a boat.
  • If you notice storm clouds, a sudden temperature drop or wind speed increasing, play it safe and get off the water.
  • When operating a motorized boat, know about carbon monoxide; this odorless, colorless poisonous gas is emitted by all combustion engines and onboard motor generators.

Safe Swimming

  • Stay close, be alert, and watch children in and around the pool.
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool first.
  • Avoid alcohol if you are swimming or supervising children who are swimming or playing in/near water.
