In am emergency would your pets be safe?
FEMA recommends creating two emergency kits for your pets.
- Home Kit
- This kit should contain everything your pet may need if you are trapped where you are.
- Travel Kit
- This smaller, lightweight kit should have everything your pet would need if you have to leave quickly.
Emergency kits should include:
- At least three days of food and water in airtight, waterproof containers
- Animal first aid kit
- Medicine
- Backup collar, leash and ID tag
- Registration information, adoption papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a waterproof container
- Carrier
- Sanitation items such as trash bags, paper towels, pet litter and a litter box
- A list of phone numbers for animal agencies such as the Humane Society, SPCA and emergency veterinary hospitals.
Along with creating emergency kits be sure to plan where your pet would go in an emergency.
- Many shelters do not accept pets, so prepare by finding a pet-friendly hotel, or pet boarding facility near an evacuation facility or your family’s meeting place.
- Develop a buddy system with neighbors, friends or relatives to ensure someone will care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so.
It is also a good idea to place Pets Inside stickers on your doors and windows to alert emergency workers that pets are inside the home.
