The majority of winter weather injuries happen on the roadways, but once you are off the roads it is important to stay safe at home. Ready.gov provides detailed information to prepare, including directions on creating home and auto emergency kits for winter storms.

Make sure you are ready for the next winter storm by completing this checklist:

Winter Storm Preparation Checklist

  • Around The House
    • Chimney cleaned and inspected
    • Fuel-burning equipment vented to the outside
    • Fire extinguishers accessible
    • Gutters clear
    • Tree branches that could fall on the home are trimmed back
    • Pipes are insulated
    • NOAA Weather Radio available and working
    • Reviewed additional safety reminders at Ready.gov
  • Car Emergency Kit
    • Car emergency kit includes
      • A shovel
      • Windshield scraper and small broom
      • Flashlight
      • Battery powered radio
      • Extra batteries
      • Water
      • Snack food
      • Matches
      • Extra hats, socks and mittens
      • First aid kit with pocket knife
      • Necessary medications
