Snow Safety

Shoveling Tips

Shoveling snow can be a serious workout, and one of the most dangerous things about a snowstorm. There is a potential for heart attacks, back strain and even dehydration.

Shoveling can cause sudden increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and the cold air can cause constriction of the blood vessel and decrease oxygen to the heart.  If you are at risk for a heart attack do not shovel snow.

If you have to shovel, make sure to:

  • Salt and prepare the area before the storm
  • Warm-up and stretch before starting
  • Dress in loose fitting layers
  • Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated
  • Use a small shovel and scoop small amounts of snow
  • Push the snow rather than lifting if possible
  • When lifting, keep your back straight, lift with your legs and avoid twisting
  • Watch for warning signs of a heart attack which include dizziness, lightheadedness, being short of breath, tightness or burning in chest, neck, arms or back. If you think you are having a heart attack call 911.

Home Heating Safety

Falling temperatures result in a rise of space heater and fireplace use. With home heating fires being a leading cause of home fire deaths it is important to follow these safety tips.
