CCFR To Honor 12-Year-Old Hero

Heimlich Manuever

On Aug. 25, Central County Fire & Rescue (CCFR) honored a young local hero at its board meeting.

Kyle Prater, 12, was honored for his quick and skillful actions, displayed during a recent family trip to Baskin Robbins. His younger sister, Camden, 9, began to choke on her ice cream cone on the ride home.

Although their mother pulled over to help the girl, Kyle stopped her and said, “I got this, Mom.” He then proceeded to administer the Heimlich maneuver — learned during a free first aid and CPR class at the St. Charles City-County Library — and dislodged the airway obstruction.

“For anyone to be able to take first aid skills they’ve learned and apply them under pressure can be challenging,” CCFR Assistant Chief Steve Brown says. “This young boy and his family should be very proud.”
