Why did you become a firefighter?

I was in high school just south of the Kansas City metro area when six KCFD firefighters were killed in an explosion at a fire at a construction site. It was amazing to witness the aftermath of that event and watching tens of thousands of firefighters come to KC from all across the world to fill Arrowhead Stadium for their funerals. I was inspired in watching so many complete strangers take time out of their lives to come from all across the world to honor the lives and sacrifice of these men they’d never before met. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself…the brotherhood of the fire service.

How long have you been with the District?

I started with CCFR in July of 1998. My first day on shift was my 25th birthday, and it remains the best birthday present ever.

What is your favorite part of the job?

There’s so much to choose from…

  1. I love knowing that every day is a completely different day with new opportunities and experiences…there are no two days (or calls) in the fire service that are exactly alike.
  2. I also enjoy helping people navigate what is most likely the worst day of their life. Being able to help people through that truly is a blessing.
  3. I gain great satisfaction in the work we do in the community through the CCFR Community Outreach.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with family, and any day with a fishing pole in hand and a hook in the water is a great day!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I lead a successful basketball ministry/league through my church for twelve years.
