Firefighter Mike Roth has been serving the CCFR community for nearly two decades!

Why did you become a firefighter?
I became a firefighter so I could impact people’s lives in a positive way. I live in the district (in Orchard Farm, on the northern edge of St. Charles) and really enjoy being involved with the community. It’s a wonderful place to live and work.

How long have you been with the District?
I have been with Central County Fire & Rescue District since 1998. I currently work on the A-Shift.

What is your favorite part of the job?
Variety is the spice of life; I see something different every day when I’m on the job, which keeps life interesting!

What do you like to do outside of work?
Anything I can do outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. I also like to unwind in front of the TV in the evenings.

What would people be surprised to know about you?
I’m a quiet guy. I don’t like to draw attention to myself. I like being a behind the scene person.

Describe a typical day at the firehouse.
We start the day with a truck check to make sure everything’s in working order and that all equipment is accounted for. Every piece of equipment on the truck is inventoried, checked, and run. Once the truck check is complete, we eat breakfast and then start on our other duties, such as housekeeping, maintenance, plus training and working out. And of course, we go out on calls as needed.

What are two thing about you job that people would surprise non-firefighters?
Firefighting really is a full-time job. In addition to our regular duties and assignments, we put in a lot of time while off-duty for meetings and community service programs. We also spend a lot of time training; if we don’t keep up on our training, we lose certain certifications.
